Route 15 is a dual and triple-lane divided expressway. The road is smooth, with electronic speed enforcement keeping a calm, measured pace. The SASCO Palm and Petroline rest facilities along it have clean ablution areas, air-conditioned prayer halls and proper dining.

The Badr detour: the advantage only a private car provides

If you take the Haramain railway you flash through the desert at 300 km/h in two hours and see nothing but blurred sand fences. By private car you have the option to take the westward fork toward the Plains of Badr, roughly 150 km south-west of Madinah.

What happens when you reach Madinah

As the highway descends toward the Prophet’s City the atmosphere changes completely. The bustle of Makkah gives way to an immediate, palpable Sakinah. You pass Mount Ayr to your south and the unmistakable silhouette of Mount Uhud across the northern horizon. Your driver takes King Abdulaziz Road or King Fahd Road into the Markaziyah, the central pedestrian precinct around Al-Masjid an-Nabawi, and delivers your family to your hotel reception.
